The Alexander Technique
What is it?
The Alexander Technique is a process through which you learn to change your habits of movement, posture, coordination and balance. This can allow you to perform any activity efficiently and with ease and to prevent the habits which are often the cause of bad functioning of our bodies or pain.
What is it not?
-It is not a therapy but a learning process with therapeutical results. The person who learns it has an active role in the lesson and takes responsibility for using it during the day. I treat you as student, not as a patient.
- It is not excercise like yoga, tai-chi or gym. We don't need to make a special time to practise it but it can be practised any time of the day
-It is not relaxation: it helps you to use the right amount of muscular tone to perform any activity.
What it gives you?
The AT helps you to become conscious and to gain control over your body in any activity. It prevents the repetition of movement, postures or attitudes which are often interfering with your health, the quality of your activities or your psychological state. This has a direct effect on your breathing, your posture and your general health and well being.
The AT was created and developed about 100 years ago by FM Alexander (1869-1955), an actor who suffered with voice loss problems. Conventional medical interventions failed to address the problem and left him unsatisfied. Through a process of self examination, including extensively observing himself in mirrors, he discovered that unconscious habits of tension were affecting the good functioning of his body, and therefore his breathing, his voice and his performance were affected. Through improving the 'use' of his body he could re-educate his habits and solve his problems. Not just his voice problems were addressed - his general functioning and health were improved. After many years working on himself he started to teach other people and to train teachers in London and America.
Since its origin the Alexander Technique has received medical and scientific support.
The British Medical journal proved that a series of Alexander Technique lessons were effective for chronic or recurrent back pain after 1 year.
Different big companies such as Google, Siemens, Victorinox, BBC Zurich and Alliance are using it for occupational safety and health. And they have proven to help reducing cervical, back , lumbar, hips, shoulders, arms, wrists, hands and fingers pain.
The coordination that we practise in the AT lessons is often observed in young children. The head has a dynamic relationship with the torso. That allows freedom of movement and the differents functions of our body and our mind to work at their best potential.
